Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck), and Partial Abdominoplasty (Mini Tummy Tuck) in New York & New Jersey Area

AbdominoplastyAfter maternity, many new mothers take to diet and exercise in order to achieve the flat and well-toned abdomen from their pre-pregnancy days. However, sometimes it takes much more to restore a your body. A loose and sagging tummy is often the result of the skin being stretched from pregnancy, and not fat deposits.

An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or a partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) can be used to help you reclaim the slim, flat stomach you had before maternity.

What are the benefits of a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty can enhance the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the muscles for new mothers with pockets of fat or loose skin that are not responding to diet and exercise, including those with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy.

A partial abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck”, is a similar procedure, but it involves a shorter incision and the skin is only lifted to the navel, which does not have to be moved.

Am I an ideal candidate for an abdominoplasty or partial abdominoplasty?

Mothers who have stretched muscles and skin from multiple pregnancies often find tummy tucks are able to tighten those muscles and reduce the excess skin.

Ideal candidates for a partial abdominoplasty, or mini tummy tuck, are women who are close their ideal body weight (within 10%) and include those ladies who do not have enough excess fat and skin for a full tummy tuck procedure, yet too much for liposuction alone. The procedure works especially well for women with a localized fullness within the lower abdomen that can be easily removed through the smaller incision.

It is worth noting that abdominoplastys are not substitutes for weight loss or proper exercise. Also, tummy tucks (in general) will not correct stretch marks, though they can sometimes be removed or slightly improved if they happen to be located on the same areas of excess skin that will be removed.

Dr. Fiorillo will discuss the various benefits and risks of each procedure, and help you decide if either is right for you.

How is a full abdominoplasty performed?

An abdominoplasty is considered major surgery, and is performed with the you completely sedated.

In a full abdominoplasty, Dr. Fiorillo makes an incision from hip to hip right above your pubic area. Another incision is then made to free the navel from the surrounding skin. From there, the skin is detached from the abdominal wall to reveal the muscle and fascia.

Dr. Fiorillo then tightens the muscle and fascia with stitches. Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction is sometimes used to refine the transition zones of the abdomen. A dressing and/or compression garment is then applied, and excess fluid is drained.

How is a partial abdominoplasty performed?

A mini tummy tuck is performed as an outpatient procedure under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of fat and skin to be removed, as well as your overall health and preference.

During the procedure, Dr. Fiorillo creates a small incision above your pubic area, instead of the hip-to-hip incision needed for a full abdominoplasty. There is also no need for an incision around the navel. The skin is lifted up to the navel to remove the localized fat and tighten muscles in the lower abdominal area. Depending on the extent of fat removal needed, liposuction is sometimes utilized for a less invasive removal. There is no need for the navel to be repositioned with this less invasive procedure.

Dr. Fiorillo then closes the incisions with sutures, and small drains may be inserted to reduce the risk of fluid buildup in the area. The whole procedure takes anywhere from one to two hours to perform, which is much shorter than a full tummy tuck.

What is the recovery from a full abdominoplasty like?

Your recovery is dependent on the extent of the treatment, techniques used, and numerous other factors. The initial recovery period can take from one to four weeks with Dr. Fiorillo advising you to take at least part of this time off from work. Strenuous activity is discouraged and best avoided during the recovery period.

At first you might experience bruising and inflammation, but a compression garment or abdominal binder can be used to minimize this. Full recovery takes up to 6 months, with scars fading during and after the recovery period.

What is the recovery from a partial abdominoplasty like?

After a partial abdominoplasty procedure, you are allowed to return home the same day following a few hours of monitoring. The recovery period is considerably shorter than that of a full tummy tuck procedure. Compression garments will be used to ensure proper healing for the next two to three weeks, although most patients will find themselves able to return to work after a week or two. Heavy lifting and strenuous is discouraged for about a month.

What are the possible risks of a full abdominoplasty?

Tummy tucks are generally considered safe procedures. However, as with any type of surgery, it carries with it certain risks. Most of these can be avoided if you carefully follow the instructions you receive from Dr. Fiorillo. Severe complications occur in rare cases, however, and these can include blood clots, cardiac and pulmonary complications, infection, or thrombosis.

What are the possible risks of a partial abdominoplasty?

Although mini tummy tucks are generally considered a safe procedure, they also carry certain inherent risks. Some of these can include bleeding, infection, poor healing, and blood clots. While these risks cannot be eliminated, they can be mitigated by choosing an expert like Dr. Fiorillo to perform their procedure, and by following his instructions before and after surgery.
